2.40 Carats Very Beautiful Faceted Natural Spinel

Carat weight: 2.40

Dimension 9x7x5 mm
Weight 2.40 Carats
The name spinel comes from the Greek word for spark. The name has also been said to come from the Latin word spina for spine or thorn, because spinel is often found as very sharp crystals. Since medieval times, spinel has also been known as the balas ruby, after Balascia (today Badakhshan), a region of northeast Afghanistan that for many years was a source of fine specimens of spinel. Spinel comes in many different colors however red and blue are the most famous because for centuries they have been mistaken for ruby and sapphire.
Spinel is a hard stone, rating an 8 on the hardness scale. The stone is transparent to almost opaque, has vitreous luster, and comes in many colors ranging from yellow to red to rose, green, blue or violet. Its colors are caused by various metallic impurities. Colorless spinel also exists- this is the purest form of spinel. The most popular color of spinel is red, which is mistaken for ruby because the two gems share many of the same properties. They are similar in amount of luster, density and hardness, as well as chemical composition, deriving their red hue from chromium, though spinel actually has a slightly pinker hue than ruby. Spinel occurs in granites and metamorphic rocks, frequently embedded in the rocks. Its hardness and resistance to weathering means that it can be found as pebbles in rivers and beach sands.
Gem quality spinel often occurs in limestone gravel in Sri Lanka, Burma, India and Russia. The finest stones come from the Mogok mines in Central Burma. Spinel is also found in Australia, Italy, Madagascar, Pakistan, Sweden, Turkey, Ceylon, Thailand, New Jersey and New York. Because Spinel is so durable, it can be cleaned using any commercial jewelry cleaner, ultrasonic machine, or plain soap and water using a soft brush. Wipe the stone dry with a soft cloth after cleaning it.
